Ideal snare sizes?

Ok, i have the snare bug now and may be looking to expand the collection, er, family. [img]rolleyes.gif[/img]
What do you guys consider the 'ideal' size(s) for an overall versatile snare. Adding to that thought, what material would you prefer those sizes to be in? I have my ideas and opinions but am looking for all you guys' input to blow my mind and give me different points of view.
P.S. If Randy doesn't chime in on this one then i will be very disappointed! [img]tongue.gif[/img]

For me the ideal all-in-one snare is 14"x5" or 5.5" Maple Snare with Die Cast hoops. You can tune it high as a piccolo or low as a deep snare. (If you can buy only one snare drum.)

But the real answer is different. It depends on situation. A versatile drummer needs too many different snare drums. Maple, Birch, Steel, Brass, deep or shallow vs. If you are playing different styles you may need different snare drum. I think if you change the snare drum your overall drum sound will change.

I know this could be a subjective question but, In your expirinces using, testing and hearing different brands and models...

what brand offers the best snare drums in terms of quality, durability, sound character etc.

I myself am hoping to have my own gear, and I really like to have a brass or steel piccolo snare instead of those standard 14X5's... [img]graemlins/wonder.gif[/img]

I tend to avoid 14" snares for 13"s... they seem to just feel better, not necessarly sound better but my main snare and ideal size is 5x13". A lot of range in that area. I would love to try a deeper snare though, say a 6.5x13". I have a 5.5x13 Phosphor Bronze on the way. Thinking (dreaming) about a 6.5x13" dunnett titanium.
